Cake Decorating Techniques

Cake Decorating tips?

i want to make a bowling ball cake (its actually a sphere too), and i need techniques on how to make the frosting smooth! got any ideas?

oh and i do not want to use fondant, i dont like the taste. also, which frosting is best to use? i wouldnt want to make it, i wanna buy it :p my local grocery store offers pre-made frosting from there bakery? sound good to you? lol

Hi,

It helps to put the cake in the in the fridge to cool and harden, this stops the cake from breaking up and crumbling. Also dirty ice the cake first with a thin layer of frosting and then cool again. With the final layer of icing the lady before is right use a thin piece of plastic that can be easily bent to be able to curve around the ball shape of the cake. Go round and round until you get a really smooth finish.

Check this page out, it has a utube video on making a princess cake and icing with frosting, she uses the same method to smooth the frosting out. It might help to see how it’s done.

Great idea by the way, I’ve never seen a bowling ball cake.

I’ve been building a web page based on party themes and have a page on bowling so if your looking for some more ideas then take a peek. http://www.creative-kids-party.com

Also I’m desperate for photo’s of themed cakes that people make for their friends and family so if you want to, please submit a photo on the submissions pages which are on most of the site’s cake pages and I’ll post it up for people to take inspiration from.

lots of luck with the cake and party.
